Interview with Costa Motors CEO , Marc Grebler

We are delighted to have the opportunity to interview Marc Grebler, the CEO of Costa Motor , a leading Land Rover Restoration Company based in Barcelona . Marc has been at the helm of the company since many years, and has overseen its rapid growth and expansion into new markets.

He is also a passionate car enthusiast and collector, with a special interest in Land Rover vehicles. In this interview, we will talk to Marc about his vision for Costa Motor , his insights on the automotive industry, and his personal experience with Land Rover.

Thank you, Marc, for your time and for sharing your story with us.

 - What inspired you to start costamotor.com and how did you turn your passion for Land Rovers into a successful business?

The inspiration behind the inception of Costamotor.com stemmed from my deep admiration for Range Rovers. I've always found them incredibly cool, with their distinct and appealing aesthetics, even though they might not be the most comfortable vehicles to use. Recognizing the unique charm of Land Rovers, I proposed to my family the idea of channeling our efforts into crafting a vehicle that not only emulated the iconic appearance of a Land Rover but also delivered a driving experience reminiscent of a Range Rover. This vision became the driving force behind our journey to transform passion into a thriving business.

- What are some of the most challenging and rewarding projects you have worked on and what makes them unique or special?

The most challenging yet rewarding project in my experience has invariably been the first one. Embarking on the journey, taking risks, and navigating through the unknown can be inherently stressful, but it's a pivotal step that we eagerly embraced. What sets it apart is the thrill of seeing possibilities unfold despite uncertainties.
However, when reflecting on the most rewarding aspects, it's not just about building the car; it's about fostering a remarkable team. Our success isn't solely measured by the vehicles we create but by the passionate and hardworking individuals who form an integral part of our team. Witnessing the collective dedication to our shared vision and the genuine enthusiasm for every aspect of the car is what truly brings me immense joy and fulfillment.

- How do you balance the originality and authenticity of the Land Rover models with the modernization and personalization of the customers' preferences?

That's an excellent question. Dealing with Defender enthusiasts often proves advantageous because they typically embrace the rich culture and history of the car. This shared appreciation facilitates a smoother collaboration with customers. Taking the time to truly understand their needs is paramount for us.
Our approach centers around striking a delicate balance. Rather than reinventing the car, our goal is to preserve its original look and essence. We aim to keep the culture alive, ensuring that each Land Rover retains its authenticity. Simultaneously, we incorporate modernization and personalization to enhance reliability and coolness, creating a harmonious fusion that pays homage to the heritage while meeting the evolving preferences of our customers.

 - What are some of the latest trends and innovations in the Land Rover industry and how do you incorporate them into your services?

The Land Rover industry has seen a surge in trends and innovations, particularly in enhancing both aesthetics and performance. Simple yet impactful details like upgraded lights and redesigned grills have become notable trends, transforming the overall look of the cars and giving them a more modern and trendy feel.
On the mechanical and engineering front, one innovation that has made a substantial difference is improved soundproofing. As someone who personally drives Defenders daily, I can attest to the significant positive impact of this innovation on the overall driving experience.
For us, any innovation that contributes to the car's better functionality is wholeheartedly embraced. While making a Defender look contemporary and trendy isn't overly complicated, the real challenge lies in sourcing materials of the highest quality. We prioritize finding the right balance between aesthetics and functionality, and our customers understand and appreciate the correlation between quality and price in the long run.

- How do you ensure the quality and reliability of your work and what are some of the best practices or standards you follow?

Ensuring quality and reliability is a meticulous process involving several key steps. It all begins with a thorough inspection of the chassis, as preventing oxidation is crucial for long-term durability. We meticulously select cars with pristine chassis to avoid any compromise in this foundational aspect. Once we have the right vehicle, we take the radical step of completely disassembling it and starting afresh.
A critical part of our process involves sanding the chassis instead of using corrosive solutions, followed by a meticulous coating with a specially formulated paint. This foundational step ensures that the core of the car is robustly built and resistant to wear and tear.
Moreover, we prioritize strategic partnerships with industry leaders. For engineering, we trust Ashcroft, renowned for their excellence in the field. Similar standards apply to our choice of leather and other materials. The reliability of the final product, in essence, hinges on the quality of the materials used from the very beginning of the restoration process. It's a commitment to meticulous craftsmanship and the use of top-notch components that defines our best practices, setting the stage for enduring quality and reliability in our work.

 - What are some of the benefits and challenges of working with hybrid or electric Land Rovers and how do you adapt to them?

Honestly, we haven't ventured into the realm of hybrid or electric Land Rovers, and it's not a path we currently plan to tread. While it's undoubtedly an exciting and innovative direction for some brands, the high costs involved, often exceeding $250,000 USD, present a significant challenge for us. Moreover, there's the concern that transitioning to electric power might dilute the essence and authenticity that defines a Land Rover.
If someone is seeking an electric vehicle, opting for models like Tesla or Taycan might be a more suitable and cost-effective choice. We recognize that some clients may desire the classic look of a Defender paired with an electric engine, but it doesn't align with our core values. While the prospect of trying one is intriguing, and I'm open to the experience, I have reservations about it resonating with the true essence of a Land Rover. With all due respect, I remain skeptical but open to the possibilities.

- How do you manage your team and what are some of the skills or qualities you look for in your employees or collaborators?

In our company, two elements hold paramount importance – the customer, without whom the company cannot thrive, and the team, without whom serving the customer would be impossible. We're fortunate to have a team that not only operates efficiently but is also growing alongside the company, and most importantly, they embody our values.
Managing the team begins with understanding their needs. Recognizing the significance of family time, we adjusted our work schedule, starting our days at 7 am and concluding at 3 pm. This not only eliminates the stress of rush-hour traffic but, more importantly, allows our team to dedicate quality time to their families. Witnessing their satisfaction as they balance work and personal life, whether picking up their kids, hitting the gym, or pursuing personal projects like motocross, brings me immense joy.
The primary quality we seek in our team members is honesty. An open-minded and honest team is crucial to us. Similar to any relationship, effective communication and collaboration are key, contributing to a positive and productive work environment.

 - What are some of the goals or plans you have for the future of costamotor.com and how do you cope with the changing market and customer demands?

Our primary goal for the future of Costamotor is to significantly increase production, aiming to manufacture between 12 and 15 cars annually. This marks a pivotal step forward for us. Additionally, we are fortunate to embark on collaborations with brokers like yourself who align with our values and embody the spirit of Costa Motor. This strategic partnership allows them to concentrate on customer acquisition while we continue to excel at what we do best – building exceptional cars. It's a symbiotic relationship that we believe achieves the optimal balance.
In navigating the evolving market and shifting customer demands, we acknowledge that trends like colors and specific details may change. However, the enduring essence of the Defender will remain a constant, and at the core of Costamotor, our commitment to excellence and authenticity will only strengthen. Adapting to the market and customer needs involves a keen awareness of trends without compromising the timeless qualities that define our brand.

- How do you deal with competition or criticism and what are some of the advantages or disadvantages of being a niche business in the Land Rover industry?

Drawing from my experience as a high-level athlete, I've learned to trust my skills and capabilities, tuning out the noise of external opinions. Viewing our employees as a team rather than just a company also provides a solid foundation. In the realm of competition, I see it as a positive force. It keeps the adrenaline flowing, motivating us to continually exceed expectations and improve. Healthy competition is invigorating.
Criticism, if any, is something we handle by staying true to ourselves and our values. As long as we maintain that authenticity, I'm confident in our resilience. Being in a niche business within the Land Rover industry has its advantages and disadvantages. The competition is intense, but it's a stimulating challenge. We've carved a niche in the high-end Defender sector, and as an established player, the future looks promising. The size of the niche market may present initial hurdles, but it also signifies a devoted customer base, making it a rewarding journey to navigate and thrive within this unique segment.

- What are some of the values or principles that guide your business and how do you communicate them to your customers or partners?

At the core of our business are two guiding principles – passion and reliability. These values serve as the bedrock of our communication with customers and partners. It's crucial for us to convey the immense value we add to each car.
While we position ourselves on the higher end of the price spectrum, we emphasize the competitive edge we maintain. Many customers initially explore cheaper alternatives but often find their way back to our garage for repairs. As the saying goes, you get what you pay for. Our commitment to quality ensures that our builds not only endure but maintain their pristine condition over the years. We want our customers to return, not just for repairs but because they recognize the lasting value in our high-quality builds. Building trust and fostering lasting relationships is paramount to us, and the longevity and reliability of our vehicles speak volumes in that regard.

Hi everyone, welcome to Defenders for Sale Spain , the blog where we share our passion for classic Land Rover Defenders. Today we have a special treat for you: an exclusive interview with the CEO of Dyler.com , Dmitrijus Borisenka. Dyler.com is one of our partners and sponsors, and we are very grateful for their support and collaboration. Here are some of the questions we asked the CEO about Dyler.com, the classic car market, and his personal preferences. - What is the mission and vision of Dyler.com? At Dyler, we're dedicated to connecting classic car enthusiasts worldwide with their dream vehicles and providing a modern and easy-to-use platform for selling and buying classic and exotic cars. Our vision is to become the prime destination for car lovers worldwide. We seek to redefine the classic car market by offering access to dream vehicles, building a vibrant global community, and preserving the legacy of automotive excellence for future generations. - How did you come up with the idea of creating an online platform for buying and selling classic and modern cars? Dyler started in 2017. Originally, my friends and I wanted to create a car marketplace for Eastern Europe and the Baltics, without focusing on classic cars. But we noticed that this market was already crowded, so we decided to switch our focus to classic cars in Western Europe and the US. As someone who loves classic cars, I noticed that existing websites were old-fashioned and hadn't changed much since the early 2000s. This motivated us to bring innovation and create a modern platform tailored for classic car enthusiasts like ourselves. - What are some of the benefits and challenges of running an online marketplace for cars? Running an online marketplace for cars presents both benefits and challenges. One significant challenge is the intense competition from well-established platforms that have been around for years. Additionally, the classic car market has its limitations, with fewer cars manufactured in past decades like the 1920s or 1950s. Many of the cars we offer on Dyler are also available on competitor platforms, making it difficult to stand out. But a big advantage is the close classic car community. It's incredibly rewarding to work with people who share such passion for classic cars, and communication feels more personal. Here, you don't just see them as clients but as friends. - How do you ensure the quality and authenticity of the cars listed on your website? To ensure the quality and authenticity of the cars on Dyler, we have developed specific procedures over time. Every car ad is carefully reviewed. If any issues or concerns arise, such as suspicious content, we check the email, photos, and description provided. In case of doubt, we contact the seller for clarification. If the additional information provided is legitimate, we know that the car listing is authentic. - What are some of the trends and developments you observe in the classic car market? In the classic car market, there's a trend towards viewing classic cars as investments and valuable assets. This is mostly due to their limited availability, which drives up their value. Additionally, classic cars tend to gain value faster than other investment options. At the same time, maintaining a classic car requires ongoing investment in regular maintenance. You cannot leave it in a garage and let it collect dust for years. In general, there's a growing demand for classic cars. The COVID-19 pandemic has significantly influenced the market, with more car lovers exploring online platforms for buying, selling vehicles, and connecting with each other. - What are some of the challenges and opportunities that the COVID-19 pandemic has brought to your business? There has been a significant shift towards online purchasing and selling. But we noticed increased competition, as businesses now compete globally and not just locally. Move to online platforms has transformed how businesses interact with customers. Before, people saw these platforms as something additional, but now, they're an essential part of searching for selling or buying a classic car. As a result, businesses have had to adapt their strategies to effectively connect with customers digitally. - How do you cope with the competition from other online platforms and dealers? We focus on bringing in modern technologies and strategies to Dyler. I have another project called Coingate, a cryptocurrency payment processor, where I can see what strategies are effective and can apply them to Dyler. We also focus on creating special and exclusive content. For example, our blog features articles and interviews with famous figures in the car industry. This content attracts significant interest and helps us to stand out from competitors. - What are some of the features and services that make Dyler.com stand out from the rest? First of all, Dyler offers free listings. Unlike competitors who charge fees or commissions for a car sold, we don’t require any payment to list a car. We've also incorporated AI-generated descriptions for listings, streamlining the process of publishing a car ad. By simply answering a few questions, the description is automatically created. - How do you promote and market your website to attract more buyers and sellers? As an online platform, SEO is crucial. You have to pay attention to what your customers search for, how they interact with your website and how your website performs from a technical perspective. At the same time, traditional strategies remain relevant. Social media continues to play a significant role. Additionally, we actively seek partnerships, like with Defenders for Sale. Some collaborations may involve our affiliate shop, offering classic car enthusiasts related products, for example, posters or gloves. We're also seeking partnerships to create exclusive content for our blog. Building a network of partners is important in niche markets. - What are some of the goals and plans you have for the future of Dyler.com? In 2022, we launched the German version of Dyler, followed by the release of Dyler for Italy this January. We see great potential in local markets. When users visit a website and use it in their own language, with cars available in their region, they are more likely to stay engaged. For example, someone in Spain searching for a Porsche 911 would prefer to see cars located nearby rather than in the USA. We're considering expanding to other regions, such as Dyler Spain or Dyler Netherlands. Additionally, we're exploring the possibility of adding auctions into our platform. Auctions are popular among classic car enthusiasts for their simplicity, reliability, and potential for higher final prices. - What are some of your favorite classic cars and why? As for classic cars, I’m consistent and believe that BMW M1 would be my ultimate dream. Strangely, I’m fond of the Lamborghini LM002 - basically the first-ever luxury carmaker’s SUV from the 1980s. From the interwar period, I’m fond of the Hispano-Suiza design. All of these gems are above my budget, but it’s always an eye-catcher to see them. - Do you own any classic cars yourself? If so, what are they and how often do you drive them? BMW M6 was my childhood poster hero. I took the cheapest possible version in 2014 and got a rusted 1984 BMW M6 from Germany. Luckily, it was at rock-bottom prices for such cars back in 2014, and it has now increased fourfold in price. Also, I got involved in the restoration process, which took nearly 8 years and cost more than the car itself when I bought it. It’s a shark- nosed, Achatgrun BMW M6 with Alpina wheels. I have a feeling for BMWs, and there’s always a special model in any particular timeframe; so for the 90s, it was the BMW 8 series. I think it’s the pinnacle of technology in the 90s and a reinvention of the car itself. One’s got to love such an attitude. I have an Alpina B12 with a 5.0 V12 engine from that timeline, only 97 of these were produced, with mine having an 8th badge. Currently in our possession, we have an 80s Mercedes-Benz Gelandewagen, 1984 to be exact. We took it from one of the Dyler dealers, and it used to be an airport car to scare birds. Our mission was to go through the Budapest-Bamako rally with it: an 8,000 km journey from Europe to the Atlas Mountains, Sahara Desert, and sub- Saharan continent; which we completed successfully in 2018. Very poor selection on engine size and fuel type (2 litre's, petrol), but we have many fond memories with it. - What are some of the hobbies and interests you enjoy outside of work? I have a solid track record in endurance races: competed in Ironmans, did a handful of marathons and various ultraruns. Currently I spend my leisure time exploring a topic which was always in my interest - philosophy. Other than that my biggest project so far - daughter, takes most of my free time. - Do you have any advice or tips for aspiring entrepreneurs or classic car enthusiasts? My main tip is to be brave and take bold steps. Even if things don't go as planned, every experience is valuable. Don't fear making mistakes — it’s part of the learning process. Additionally, it's crucial to stay proactive and keep an eye on what is going on in the world, so that you can adapt to changes effectively. We hope you enjoyed this interview as much as we did. Stay tuned for more exciting content from Defenders for Sale Spain , and don't forget to check out dyler.com for your next classic car purchase or sale. Thank you for reading!

Welcome to our Land Rover Blog defendersforsalespain.com If you are interested in exporting a vehicle from Spain to the USA, you might have many questions about the process, the cost, the paperwork, the time to delivery, and the taxes you have to pay. In this blog post, I will try to answer some of these questions and provide you with some useful tips and resources. First of all, you need to check if your vehicle is eligible for importation into the USA. Not all vehicles are allowed to enter the country, as they have to comply with the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and Department of Transportation (DOT) standards. Generally speaking, vehicles that are less than 25 years old must meet these standards, or be modified to meet them, before they can be imported permanently into the USA. Vehicles that are older than 25 years are considered classic cars and are exempt from these requirements. You can also import a vehicle temporarily for up to 12 months for reasons such as racing, display, repair, leisure, vacation, exhibition, or events. However, you must ship the vehicle back to Spain before the expiration of the period. Secondly, you need to get a quote for the shipment of your vehicle from Spain to the USA. The cost of shipping a car from Spain to the USA depends on several factors, such as the origin and destination ports, the size and weight of the vehicle, the shipping method, and the insurance coverage. You can get a free quote from BR LOGISTICS , a trusted partner in international car shipping with over 20 years of experience. They offer competitive rates and reliable services for shipping cars from Spain to any port in the USA. Thirdly, you need to prepare the paperwork and documentation for your vehicle export from Spain and import into the USA. Some of the documents you will need are: - Bill of Lading: This is a document issued by the shipping company that lists the details of your shipment, such as the shipper, consignee, vessel name, departure and arrival ports, cargo description, weight, and value. - Bill of Sale: This is a document that proves that you own the vehicle and that you have paid for it in full. - Registration from Country of Origin: This is a document that shows that your vehicle is registered in Spain and that you have paid all the taxes and fees related to it. - Proof of Ownership: This is a document that shows that you have legal title to the vehicle and that there are no liens or encumbrances on it. - EPA Form 3520-1: This is a form that shows that your vehicle complies with the US emission standards or that it is exempt from them. - DOT Form HS-7: This is a form that shows that your vehicle complies with the US safety standards or that it is exempt from them. - Manufacturer's Label on Engine: This is a label that shows that your vehicle's engine meets the US emission requirements or that it has been modified to meet them. You will need to submit these documents to the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP) at least 72 hours before your vehicle arrives at the port of entry. You will also need to pay a 2.5% duty on the value of your vehicle, plus any local charges in the US. Fourthly, you need to ship your car from Spain to the USA using a reputable shipping company like BR LOGISTICS . They offer two shipping methods for shipping cars from Spain to the USA: RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) and Container. RoRo is a method where your vehicle is driven onto a specialized ship and secured in place. Container is a method where your vehicle is loaded into a metal container and placed on a cargo ship. RoRo is usually cheaper and faster than Container, but Container offers more protection and security for your vehicle. BR LOGISTICS has weekly sailings from ports in Spain such as Barcelona, Sagunto, and Vigo to ports in the USA such as New York, Baltimore, Miami, Houston, Los Angeles, and San Francisco. Finally, you need to receive your car in the USA after it clears customs and passes inspection. You will need to present your original documents and pay any fees or taxes that apply. You will also need to register your vehicle in your state of residence and obtain a license plate and insurance. You can then enjoy driving your car in the USA! I hope this blog post has been helpful and informative for you.
